Board foot calculator
A board foot is the volume of a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long: 144 cubic inches. Hardwood lumber is often priced per board foot. Enter the rough size of one board and how many you need.
The formula
Board feet = thickness (in) × width (in) × length (ft) ÷ 12. A 1 x 6 board that is 8 feet long is 1 × 6 × 8 ÷ 12 = 4 board feet.
| Board | Length | Board feet |
|---|---|---|
| 1 x 4 | 8 ft | 2.67 |
| 1 x 6 | 8 ft | 4 |
| 1 x 8 | 8 ft | 5.33 |
| 2 x 4 | 8 ft | 5.33 |
| 2 x 6 | 8 ft | 8 |
| 1 x 12 | 10 ft | 10 |
| 2 x 8 | 12 ft | 16 |
Lumber is sold by its rough size before planing: use the size the yard quotes (a 4/4 board is 1 inch thick). Buy 10 to 20 percent extra for offcuts and defects.
