Miter angle chart
Each joint of a frame with n sides is made of two cuts, and each cut is 180 ÷ n degrees. A square picture frame is 45 degrees; a hexagon is 30.
| Sides | Miter saw angle (each end) | Corner angle |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 60° | 60° |
| 4 | 45° | 90° |
| 5 | 36° | 108° |
| 6 | 30° | 120° |
| 7 | 25.714285714285715° | 128.57° |
| 8 | 22.5° | 135° |
| 9 | 20° | 140° |
| 10 | 18° | 144° |
| 12 | 15° | 150° |
Tips
- Make a test cut on scrap: saw scales can be off by half a degree, and that adds up over four corners.
- For a frame, the lengths you cut are the long points of the pieces.
- For a polygon with side length s, the distance across the flats is s ÷ tan(180° ÷ n).
The Benchwise app has a miters and slopes calculator that gives the angles, the width across flats and corners and the roof pitch from rise and run.
